Pixel Pitch, Resolution and Viewing Distance

Calculate a physical pixel matrix and angular pixel pitch, then validate text and graphics at the intended viewing positions.

Begin with active geometry

Pixel pitch is the centre-to-centre spacing of adjacent pixels. For a regular matrix with pitch p in millimetres and active dimensions W and H in metres, the ideal counts are Nx = 1000W/p and Ny = 1000H/p. Specify horizontal and vertical pitch separately if they differ. Cabinet frames, inactive borders and seams are outside this simplified active-area calculation.

An actual wall is assembled from integer modules or cabinets. Obtain the pixel count and active dimensions of each unit, select integer quantities, then calculate the finished wall. If the desired width divided by the pitch is fractional, rounding the pixel count alone does not define a buildable product.

Hypothetical modular wall

A 600 × 337.5 mm active cabinet with 1.875 mm pitch contains 320 × 180 pixels. Eight cabinets across and six high give a 4.8 × 2.025 m active image and a 2560 × 1080 pixel matrix. Its aspect ratio is about 2.37:1. Content must be mapped to that matrix or deliberately fitted within it.

Calculate angular pixel pitch

Pitch p is the centre-to-centre spacing of pixels, not the width of their emitting area. A pitch-length span centred on the viewing axis at distance D subtends θ = 2 arctan(p / (2D)), with p and D in the same units. For small angles, the angle in arcminutes is approximately 3.438 × p(mm) / D(m). This is a geometric result, not a guaranteed reading distance.

For the hypothetical 1.875 mm wall at 5 m, the angular pixel pitch is approximately 1.29 arcminutes. A 24-pixel-high character has a nominal physical height of 45 mm. Its legibility still depends on stroke width, font, contrast, image processing, eyesight and viewing time. A one-arcminute assumption is a chosen angular criterion; it is not a universal rule for public information or text.

Test the smallest useful content

Bring actual slides, labels, symbols and video to the display. Identify the smallest essential feature and its rendered pixel dimensions after scaling. A nominal font size in an authoring tool is not a reliable substitute for measuring the final strokes on the pixel canvas.

Review the content from the closest, normal and farthest viewing positions, including the intended off-axis locations. Record task completion: reading the label, distinguishing the symbol, or recognising the required detail within the available time. Check for clipping and resampling with a native-resolution diagnostic pattern.

Release the mapping with the geometry

  • Cabinet arrangement and exact active pixel counts.
  • Active physical size, total assembly size and orientation.
  • Source canvas, crop coordinates and scaling settings.
  • Minimum content dimensions and agreed viewing positions.
  • Reference files that reproduce the acceptance result.

The companion pixel-mapping guide covers placement within a transport canvas. The calculator below uses ideal geometry for initial comparison; the cabinet drawing remains the source for final counts.
