Display Power, Energy and Supply Sizing

Separate operating energy from infrastructure load and calculate supply losses without counting them twice.

Define the electrical boundary first

State whether a power figure refers to LED modules at DC input, cabinets at AC input, or the complete system including controllers, fans and other equipment. For a common boundary, whole-system input is the sum of all included loads. Do not add power-supply losses again when the measured AC input already includes them.

Keep maximum required input, measured operating power and energy separate. Infrastructure must accommodate the documented load envelope and start-up behaviour. An energy estimate represents time spent in operating states. A bright promotional clip is not a representative profile unless it matches the site's actual schedule and content.

Calculate energy from operating states

Energy in kWh is the sum of power in kW multiplied by hours in each state. Use measured or documented values at an identified mode; label assumed values as estimates.

Hypothetical daily schedule

A system using 1.2 kW for 8 hours, 0.45 kW for 4 hours and 0.02 kW for 12 hours consumes 11.64 kWh/day. At the same schedule for 30 days, that is 349.2 kWh. Multiply by the applicable tariff for an energy-only cost estimate; any demand charges or other fees are separate.

Convert DC load to AC input

With DC output Pout and efficiency η, AC real input power is approximately Pout/η at that operating point. For 1,000 W output and assumed 90% efficiency, input is about 1,111 W and supply loss is about 111 W. Use the efficiency curve at the actual input voltage and load rather than a headline maximum.

For single-phase AC, a screening current estimate is I = P/(Vrms × PF), using real input power P in W, RMS voltage Vrms in V and true power factor 0 < PF ≤ 1; I is in A. It does not describe inrush, protective-device coordination or allowable cable loading. Have a qualified electrical designer specify circuits, earthing, isolation and protection for the installation and applicable rules.

Check the rated envelope

Power-supply capacity may require derating with temperature, input voltage, altitude or orientation. Confirm the exact model's installation instructions and curves. Record the minimum voltage at the load under the required worst-case condition. A low-voltage DC connection can carry substantial current; connectors, distribution and service isolation need explicit ratings.

Check starting sequences and behaviour after a power interruption. If redundant power is required, identify which load remains supported after a failure and whether the surviving path is rated for it. Keep cooling and control equipment inside the same boundary used for the power budget.

Commissioning record

  • AC input voltage, frequency, true power, RMS current and power factor where measured.
  • Content, brightness, temperature and operating mode for each reading.
  • Maximum documented load and start-up requirements.
  • Supply models, derating conditions and DC distribution drawing.
  • Daily schedule and energy assumptions for the operating estimate.
